To play RetRO. you need to have the official client of the server, and have Play RetRO installed.

Make sure to run the RetRO Updater once the game installation is finished and adjust your resolution — the guides below walk you through it.

Installationfrom download to your first login

Download the full client from one of the links above — Google Drive or MEGA (both are the same client).
Install it in a custom folder such as C:\Games\RetRO\ — never inside Program Files, Desktop or My Documents.
Right-click RetRO.exe, RetRO Patcher.exe and run_opensetup.exe and set them to Run as Administrator.
Run the RetRO Updater / Patcher and let it finish patching before launching the game.
Open run_opensetup.exe to pick your resolution and graphics options.
Launch the client, log in with your website account and enjoy!

Windows 10 / 11: set the Compatibility Mode of RetRO.exe to Windows 7 (or XP Service Pack 3) if the client refuses to start. Full details in the Getting Started section of the wiki.

opensetup.exe does not open? That is normal. Because of the client’s voice channel system, opensetup.exe cannot be started on its own any more — always launch run_opensetup.exe from your RetRO folder instead. It is the only way to open the graphics setup normally.

You can also change the same graphics options inside the game, from the Settings menu of the client interface.

Antivirus / firewall warnings

Stuck on the loading screen

Change resolution or graphics device in run_opensetup.exe, disable full screen or sound, or reset all settings.

Gepard error 50

“Illegal software detected”: blacklisted mouse/keyboard drivers or macro tools must be closed first.

“License validation failed”: check your connection and whitelist the client folder in your antivirus.

Low FPS or freezes

Nvidia Control Panel settings (max frame rate, refresh rate, V-Sync) that stop the client from stuttering.

“Cannot init d3d” / GRF errors

Run run_opensetup.exe as administrator and switch the Graphics API to DirectX 7.
